Yarn for the Crochet Baubles
For my crochet Christmas baubles, I used the Sports-weight cotton yarn Scheepjes Catona. It comes in an array of stunning colors, making it an ideal choice for any holiday decor.
You could also use a DK weight yarn but you may need to leave out round 5…..experiment and fit on your bauble as you go, and you will soon find what’s the perfect fit for your bauble.
Guide for Crochet Hook Sizes
- Fingering weight yarn – 2.5mm hook
- Sports weight yarn – 3mm hook
- Dk weight yarn – 3.5mm hook
Making Adjustments for your Crochet Bauble
If you are using a 4 ply/sportsweight weight cotton yarn, the crochet bauble pattern can easily be adjusted.
You may need to repeat row 6 a few times to ensure your crochet piece snuggly fits your bauble. As you crochet along, keep trying it on your bauble for the optimal tight fit.
A top tip: don’t hesitate to slightly stretch the two pieces while sewing them together. This method will give you a firm and beautiful crochet Christmas bauble.
Inserts for your Christmas Balls
The affordable, readily available baubles you find in most stores will work perfectly. Even better, why not recycle last year’s decorations? Our crochet Christmas bauble free pattern offers a great way to refresh your holiday decor without straining your budget!
I use the cheap baubles you can buy everywhere in packs, and you probably have plenty of them in last year’s decorations! Popular size would be 8in [20cm] in circumference.

You are welcome! I am using some glitter yarn at the moment…..its another level!
Such a lovely crochet project! Thank you for sharing this pattern.
These are beautiful. I want to try them. I don’t see a hook size listed.
Cassie Armstrong
Hi Cassie. The hooks sizes depend on the yarn you use. 3.5mm works best for DK weight yarn and 2.5mm for a 4 ply/fingering weight yarn. You may need to adjust the amount of rounds, just measure on your bauble as you go. And thank you!
Does it have to be cotton yarn?
Hi:) You can make the baubles with any fiber (there are some lovely acrylic yarns). Cotton does give a very firm bauble but use whatever you have!
These are so cute .
Thank you

Do you have a follow along video for these granny square baubles?
I don’t sorry! But I will try to make one:)
I’m think these are wonderful. I’m curious but do you put in a Styrofoam ball or use stiffener to make they stay round?
Hi! I use cheap baubles that you probably already have at home for your tree. I sew the 2 sides together over the ball to cover it
Could you just stuff them with poly fil?
You could! Have fun:)
